Grade 10 English HN versus AP Seminar

Use this as a checklist before you meet with your counselor!

English 10 HN
AP Seminar

This course includes literature from many cultures
and historical periods and explores themes such
as human rights and the concepts of power. You
will discover how authors use vocabulary,
symbolism, and literary devices. In addition, the
course develops writing skills in research and
argumentation.

During this course you will be assessed in a
variety of ways including multiple choice, short
answer questions, in-class essays. You will write
essays for a variety of purposes such as a
personal narrative and research paper. You may
also present your learning in alternate formats
such as Socratic seminars, speeches, and group
presentations.

This course focuses on building strong, evidence
based, arguments to answer research questions
about real world topics. Course topics are
organized around themes such as education,
social justice, and technology. Students synthesize
information for a variety of sources and formats to
explain in essays and presentations.

During this course you will prepare for the AP
exam which includes free response, 1200 word
individual research report, 2000 word individual
written argument, and team multimedia
presentation. In the second half of the course,
students will be independently completing
external assessments and self-directed research
projects.
