Great for kids of all ages and allows for a hands-on approach to educate the community about the local environment. All are welcome to join!   • Volunteers are needed for the annual Country Day School Country Day Fair held Saturday, May 6th from 10 am to 2-m. This fun filled family event is geared towards preschool children and will hosts games, crafts, face painting, tie dying and a petting zoo. We are in need of volunteers to lead the activities and play with the children. Shifts are from 10am to 12 pm and 12 pm to 2 pm. (Feel free to volunteer for both shifts if your schedule permits.) If you have any questions about volunteering or to sign up for the event please contact Erin Caplin @email.     • Environmental Archaeology Saturday Dig Days – All events will be held on the SERC campus, and there will be morning and afternoon sessions on each date. Volunteers ages 10+ welcome, although volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult.

    • Chesapeake Bay Parasite Project (aka Mud Crabs) - Most events will be held at SERC, but we will have one day in Southern Maryland (St. Leonard) and one day on the Eastern Shore (Oxford). There will be morning and afternoon sessions on each date. Volunteers ages 12+ welcome, although volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a participating adult.

Ongoing Other

  • HART (Homeless Animals Rescue Team) relies upon our volunteers at our adoption events.  The volunteers handle a dog for 3 hours (from 12-3) every Saturday at two locations:  the PetSmart on Metrotech Drive (next to Lowes).  Teens 14-17 are more than welcome to volunteer with us-- helping to socialize the dog, etc.  Store regulations require that an adult (18 and older) MUST STAY WITH THE TEEN DURING THE ENTIRE EVENT.   • Fairfax County Storm Drain Education Volunteers –- Storm drain labeling is an effective, low-cost method of educating residents about water quality problems in our streams, lakes, rivers, and the Bay. NVSWCD is currently recruiting volunteers to conduct storm drain labeling projects. These projects have three main components. First, volunteers find a location and obtain approval from the civic or homeowners' association. Second, there is a community education component.
