9th grade Social Studies Honors / AP Course Options

Please use this as a checklist before you meet with your counselor!

World 1 Honors
AP Human Geography

This course begins with the foundations of
civilization and covers the history of the world until
the start of the European Renaissance. You will also
explore the impact of power structures, religion,
and cultural innovation as states and empires rise
and fall.

During this course you are assessed in a variety of
ways including projects, multiple choice
questions, short answer, and long essays. You will
complete performance based assessments as a
substitute for the SOL exam.

  • Challenging yourself for future advanced
    coursework including AP, IB, or DE courses?
  • Exploring the big questions civilizations
    struggle to answer and analyze the impacts
    of their decisions?
  • Demonstrating your understanding with a
    hands-on approach to history and exploring

This course focuses on geographic foundations,
population and migration patterns, the formation
of cultural identity, the evolving use of agriculture,
urban planning, and how economic development
leads to globalization.

During this course you will prepare for the AP
exam which includes multiple choice, short essay,
and data analysis. You will develop specialized
skills in reading and interpreting maps and other
visuals.

AP World History: Modern

This course begins around 1500 and includes the
age of exploration, rise of multinational empires,
impact of industrialization on conflict between
civilizations, and consequences of globalization.

During this course you are assessed in many ways
including multiple choice, short answer, and long
essays. You will complete performance based
assessments as a substitute for the SOL exam.

Are you interested in…

  • Connecting historical events to modern
    global issues?
  • Exploring history from multiple perspectives
    and debating the ways civilizations interact,
    including during times of conflict or peace?
  • Becoming a global citizen, collaborating
    with your peers, and taking a deep dive into
    projects that challenge your thinking?

This course studies the world from 1200 to present
as societies engaged in global trade, empires rose
and fell, and imperialism and industrialized fueled
conflict.

During this course you will prepare for the AP
exam which includes multiple choice, short essay,
long essay, and document-based questions.
