Choosing Courses for Next School Year (2025-26)
Student Course Registration Information
In January through March of 2025, students will register for courses for the 2025-26 school year. This page contains all of the information you will need to make these important decisions.

Course Selection Dates
The dates below are tentative and may be adjusted as needed. All students will have presentations from the counselors and then an individual meeting to confirm the classes they wish to take.
It is incredibly important that students sign up for the classes they want to take. We base our staffing decisions on these initial numbers.
Rising Seniors - Class of 2026
- Classroom Presentation: January 10 - through Cougar Connect Class (This date updated due to the snow days 1/6-1/9)
- 1:1 Registration with counselor: January 13 – 28 through US/VA History Classes (This date updated due to the snow days 1/6-1/9)
Rising Juniors - Class of 2027
- Classroom Presentation: January 30 - through Cougar Connect Class
- 1:1 Registration with counselor: January 31 – February 14 through World History II/AP World Classes
Rising Sophomores - Class of 2028
- Classroom Presentation: February 18 - through Cougar Connect
- 1:1 Registration with counselor: February 19 – March 5 through World History I Classes
Rising Freshmen - Class of 2029
- Will be determined by middle school; dates will vary by school.
Our school counselors will visit our feeder Middle Schools:
- January 7 – Franklin Middle School
- January 8 – Thoreau Middle School
- January 9 – Carson Middle School

Graduation Requirements
The FCPS website details graduation requirements for students who entered 9th grade for the first time in the 2018-19 school year or later.

Virtual Course Offerings Fair
Students and families can now access our virtual course offerings fair. For each department you will find videos that will include an explanation of the course map (if applicable), explanations of the differences between course levels (AP/HN/General), and explanations about our electives offerings.

Academies and Specialized Programs
Students at Oakton are able to participate in academy courses. These courses and any available transportation are dependent on the base school. Use the links below to explore the different academies as well as check possible transportation availability. Note that transportation, when available, is dependent on enough students requiring the transportation to the specific academy.
Advanced technical and specialized elective courses are available at the High School Academies for students interested in pursuing coursework in a variety of options related to career pathways. More information can be found on the academy section of the FCPS website.
